Ugadi
Ugadi is the festival that marks the beginning of a new year and the onset of spring. The word Ugadi is made of two words: Yuga(era) and Adi(new), and literally means new era. This day symbolises new beginnings and the end of all sorrows.
On this auspicious day, people rise early in the morning, take an oil bath, and wear new clothes.
The entrance to the houses are cleansed with cowdung and are embellished with colourful Rangolis. The doorways are decorated with mango leaves (Thorana) and flowers.
The dish of the day is Ugadi chutney, made of fresh tamarind(sour), mangos(tangy), water, salt(salty), jaggery(sweet), and margosa(bitter). This is said to symbolise the various experiences in life such as sorrow, happiness, anger, etc. The chutney is then placed in an earthern pot before the idol and the idol is worshipped. After this, the family members gather and eat their meal together.
