TAMIL ARCHITECTURE
Tamil Nadu is the sacred land of temples. Architecture in Tamil Nadu mainly comprises monolithic and rock-cut temples, influenced by the different dynasties that ruled them. These temples are usually characterised by pyramid shaped, richly sculpted gateways called Gopurams. Temples also consist of inscriptions that reveal historical events.
The Airatesvara temple at Darasuram, the Brihadeeshvar temple at Thanjavur, and The gangaikondacholishwaram temple at gangai konda cholapuram are collectively known as the great living Chola temples and bring out the excellence of Chola architecture. These temples have been recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites.
