Kuchipudi
Kuchipudi is one of the major classical dance forms that has originated in a village in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is mainly based on Lord Krishna and is closely related to Bhagavatha Mela art form of Tamilnadu. The performance begins with an invocation where the characters are introduced followed by pure dance moves (nritta) and the expressive portion (nrithya) which uses hand gestures to convey the story.
The dance is accompanied by Carnatic music while the recital is in the Telugu language. The dance drama shares many postures, gestures and the carnatic music with Bharatnatyam.
A Kuchipudi performance is traditionally a night performance, when the rural families return from the farm and are free of their daily work. Kavutvams are a feature of the dance performance that is distinctive to Kuchipudi. The dancer adds acrobatics to the performance like balancing a series of pots on the head or holding diyas(burning lamps) in the hands.
