ARANMULA BOAT RACE

Kerala is one of the most beautiful and serene places in India. This pleasant state is well known for its Aranmula boat race. This race is held every year during Onam, in the malayalam month Chingam, on the river Pampa.
River Pampa:

It lasts for two days. The race commences near the Parthasarathy temple dedicated to Lord Krishna and Arjuna. Thousands of people are gathered on the banks of Pampa to watch this magnificent event. These boats are called palliyodams and are structured like snakes and decorated with golden laces and  umbrellas. Each boat consists of about 40 people, including helmsmen, oarsmen and singers, all dressed in the same white mundus(dhotis draped in a special manner) and white turbans.

Boat race:
As the boats shoves off, loud cheers and encouraging songs fill the air. The rivalry less racing of these boats is a breathtaking sight to watch. After the boats reach their destination, Valla Sadhya (around 63 dishes served on a banana leaf) is served to the boatsmen at the Parthasarathy temple. This is a very special festival.
