Sabarimala
Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha temple is a temple that is dedicated to the Hindu deity Ayyappan located at the Periyar tiger reserve in Kerala. This temple has been in the news recently for the unrest that was created when the Supreme Court overturned the ban on the entry of women in the age group of 10 to 50 on 28th September 2018.
This temple is situated on hill top and is surrounded by dense forests which form a part of the Periyar tiger reserve. Before the pilgrimage the devotees are expected to follow a 41 day long vratham that begins with wearing a special mala. Some people take the the traditional forest route while some begin climbing neeli mala from the Pamba river.
The temple is open for worship only during mangalpooja, Makar sankranti, Maha vishnu sankaranthi and the first five days of every malayalam month. The prasadam at the Sabarimala temple is aravana payasam and appam.
Harivarasanam is recited before closing the temple door every night. The well known version of this song is rendered by vocalist K.J.Yesudas. The link of this song is given below:
