Onam festival
ONAM FESTIVAL
Onam is the biggest and the most important festival of the state Kerala. The festival is celebrated to welcome king Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit kerala at the time of Onam.
Onam is celebrated at the beginning of the month chingam. This corresponds with the month of August- September according to Gregorian calendar
Carnival of onam lasts from four to ten days. First day Atham, and the tenth day thiruonam are most important of all. Onam became the National Festival of kerala in 1961. Elaborate feasts, folk songs, elegant dances, energetic games, elephants, boats, and flowers are all a part of the dynamic festival , "ONAM". Thousands of tourists visit Kerala during onam.
Many different food items are prepared during onam festival. All the special dishes of kerala are prepared for the whole ten days.
Kerala decorates as a bride during the onam festival and lot of amazing activities are also performed during this festival. Some games and sports events are also organised daily with lots of fun. All these games are jointly called " Onakalikal".
The Aranmula boat race is the oldest river boat fiesta in Kerala. It takes place at Aranmula, near a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna and Arjuna. The snake boats move in pairs to the rhythm of full- throated singing and shouting watched by an exciting crowd. Thousands of people gather on the banks of the river Pampa to watch this race. The oarsmen sing traditional boat songs and wear white mundu and turbans. Hence in these ways onam is celebrated.
