Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple
The Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple is located in the city of Madurai in Tamilnadu. This temple is dedicated to Meenakshi(Goddess Parvati) and Sundhareshwarar(Lord shiva).The temple is an excellent example of sculpture and magnificent architecture. The Meenakshi temple has 14 gopurams including the two golden gopurams for the main deities that are elaborately sculptured and painted.
The image of Meenakshi is said to be carved out of a single emerald. called 'Potramarai kulam' with the structure of a golden lotus at the centre of the pond. The temple has a pond cAccording to the legend of this temple, the marriage of Meenakshi and Sundhareshwarar(shiva) took place in Madurai and is still celebrated in summer with great enthusiasm. This festival is called the 'Tirukalyanam festival' which takes place over 10 days. This temple is definitely one of the 'Wonders of India' and one of the main attractions of South India with millions of tourists visiting it every day.
