Kerala Backwaters

Kerala also known as God's own country is known for its beautiful backwaters. They are a chain of brackish lagoons and lakes lying parallel to the Arabian sea coast. These backwaters have a unique ecosystem : freshwater from the rivers meets the salt water from the Arabian sea. Such water is extensively used for irrigation purposes.

The network includes five large lake linked by canals. Vembanad lake is the largest lake and the heart of backwater tourism. The kettuvalams (Kerala houseboats ) in the backwaters are one of the prominent tourist destinations of Kerala. More than 2000 kettuvalams  are present in the backwaters. They are classified into platinum, gold and silver by the Kerala government.

Many species of aquatic life including crabs, frogs and water birds such as kingfishers, darters and many animals such a turtles live along side these backwaters. The palm trees and other leafy bushes that grow alongside the backwaters make the surroundings look green.
