Kathakali
Kathakali is one of the major forms of Indian classical dance which is performed in Kerala. It is distinguished from other dance forms by the elaborate and colourful make up, costumes and face masks worn by the dancers. The story is communicated through impressive face expressions, hand gestures and footwork
Kathakali employs seven major make up types, namely pachcha, pazhuppu, kari, kathi, thaadi, minukku and theppu which depict various characters. The make up is usually made from rice paste and vegetable colours. Music is an integral part of every Kathakali performance. It sets the rhythm and triggers the emotions. The actor-dancers use 24 mudras and navaras(9 emotions) to convey the story which is usually a mythological story from Ramayana or Mahabharata.
