Karthigai Deepam

Every festival celebrated in Tamil Nadu has its own significance. Karthigai Deepam is the festival of lamps celebrated in Tamilnadu. As the name suggests, this festival falls in the tamil month karthigai. Clay lamps (agal vilakkus) are arranged in rows and lit.
The lighting of these lamps symbolises the birth of a light from darkness- eradication of evil, giving rise to happiness and success. Each lamp is considered auspicious.
This festival is celebrated in certain places like Thiruvannamalai for a stretch of three days. The three days being appa karthigai, vada karthigai and thiru kaarthigai. The last day is the main part of the festival. On this day, a huge lamp is lit at the thiruvannamalai temple and is visible throughout. This is called the Mahadeepam.
People from all over the state visit the temple on this day to worship lord Shiva and to celebrate the bond between brothers and sisters.
