Golu

Festivals are time to rejoice,celebrate and have lots of fun with family and friends. One of the major festivals of India, Navratri is celebrated for 9 nights and 10 days across the country. Golu is a dolls festivals that is celebrated in Tamilnadu, parts of Andhra and Karnataka.



The celebration begins with setting up of steps ranging from 3 to 11. A white cloth is used to cover these steps and the dolls are neatly arranged on these steps. Neighbours, realtives and friends are invited to catch the spectacular arrangement of the dolls and gifts are exchanged.

A special dish called 'sundal' is made out of groudnuts,peas and other pulses during the 9 day festival. The first three days are dedicated to goddess Durga, the next three are dedicated to goddess Lakshmi and the last three days are dedicated to goddess Saraswati. Women engage in singing songs and recite slokas and exchange 'vethalai pakku'.On the 10th day, the dolls are removed from the stand and packed carefully for the next Navratri.
