Bharatnatyam
In olden times, entertainment in Tamilnadu mainly involved Isai(music) and various forms of dance including Bharatnatyam. Bharatnatyam is regarded as the mother of classical dance forms of India. The theoretical base of this form traces back to 'Natya Shastra', a Sanskrit Hindu text on the performimg arts.
Bharatnatyam is classified int three brackets 'Nritta','Nritya' and 'Natya'.'Nritta' presents pure Bharatnatyam movements that emphasise on speed, pattern and the rhythmic aspects while in 'Natya' the dancer tells a story, spritual themes,a message through slower body movements harmonised with musical notes. The dance form mainly consists of certain sections performed in sequence namely Allarippu, jathiswaram, shabdam, varnam, padam and Thillana. There are various bani's(styles) in bharatnatyam like kalakshetra, vazhuvoor, pandanallur etc.
